God bless July, GOT7 is here. After more than a year’s wait, we all get what we have been waiting for. If you’re one of those fans who woke up early to watch the first episode before the internet could spoil things for you, here’s the Dragonstone review. If you belong to the other lazy kind of people, please go away, major spoilers ahead. So here’s all that went down on the first episode of Game of Thrones Season 7 –
Arya Stark’s pay back time
Usually, a GOT episode’s most iconic moment is in the end. Dragonstone however, starts with an explosion, even before the opening credits. Arya Stark is out for blood and there’s nothing that will stop that. Avenging the death of her brother, mother and sister-in-law at the Red Wedding, Arya destroyed the Frey dynasty delivering one of the most iconic dialogues of the show. “Winter came for House Frey” is going to echo in every fan’s mind for the whole Season. With such a mind-blasting start, we know Arya is going to own Season 7.
Sandor Clegane is funny
Last season we came to know that The Hound is alive and doing well. He didn’t want to interfere with the business of the Seven Kingdoms but as it turns out, he couldn’t. We see him in the Season Premiere horse riding with the Brotherhood Without Banners, and continuously giving us reasons to laugh as he insults Berric Dandarion. However, it’s not all fun and games. Clegane sees ice, the Wall and the Eastwatch-by-the-sea in the flames, which is what the last two episodes of Season 7 are going to be about. What he saw is where the Brotherhood Without Banners is headed. “The lone wolf dies, but the pack survives” is all about this.
Dany comes home
The title of the episode is with reference to Daenerys Targaryen finally setting foot in Westeros, as she comes to Dragonstone, the ancestral home of House Targaryen. Shown at the very end on the episode, we see Dany awestruck and a little afraid as she’s about to officially take on the world. Having no idea as to what awaits her, she’s still fearless as the episode ends with her saying “shall we begin?”, implying that she has no time to waste and they need to get to business right away. Tyrion, and the Hand of the Queen, is by her side, ready to provide counsel along with Yara, Theon, Missandei, Grey Worm and her three magnanimous dragons. Fire and blood’s coming to King’s Landing.
Jon and Sansa
Jon has a lot to worry about. After defeating Ramsay Bolton and reclaiming Winterfell, he was named King in the North. It had been confirmed that Jon isn’t Ned Stark’s bastard but Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen’s son. But as usual, he knows nothing about it. Taking charge at Winterfell is tough when his step-sister doesn’t quite agree with his decisions. However, keeping their difference in opinion aside, Jon and Sansa bond. Sansa claims to know what Baelish wants, and if she really does, is her not agreeing with Jon all a part of a pretense? Or is she giving Baelish opportunities to take advantage of the situation? Time will tell.
Sam and the Citadel
Sam is alive, that’s a good thing to be in Westeros, at the citadel, undergoing a weird kind of training to be a maester. Gilly and Little Sam give him company, but his mind is occupied with finding ways to defeat the Army of the Dead. He wants to enter the restricted section of the Citadel library (very Harry Potter-ish), but he isn’t allowed to (seriously, is Citadel Hogwarts?). But he steals the keys and finds what he seeks. In a book that he stole, he reads that there’s a mountain of Dragonglass at Dragonstone, somewhere underground and he immediately sends a raven to Jon. We also get a glimpse of Jorah here, whose hand is worse now, but we hope he finds the cure and returns to Dany’s side.
Cersei – The Mad Queen
Things aren’t going great with Jaime. Having lost his last son/nephew when Tommen jumped to his death, Jaime wants to know why Cersei isn’t talking about it. To make things worse, he can see what Cersei is turning into and he doesn’t quite like it. Cersei invites Euron Greyjoy, a freakish, claimed to be worse than Ramsay Bolton, lunatic who proposes to marry Cersei and join forces against the Targaryen army. Cersei declines the offer, but Euron is keen on marrying her and sets out to get her a “gift” that will change her mind about the marriage. Nobody knows what that gift is going to be, but we sure do hope it isn’t Tyrion’s head because that’s something none of us fans will be able to survive.
Army of the dead giants
Bran has another vision. Before he arrives at the Wall with Meera, he sees the Army of the Dead being led by the Night King who are marching towards the Wall, and with each second passing by, they get closer and closer. There’s been an upgrade in the army as we see three to four giants, and one of them is probably Wun Wun. If this is true, things are going to get tough for the living as they’ll have to fight giants now. If Wun Wun has been resurrected and made a Wight, what happened to Hodor? Has he been made a Wight too? We hope not. Watching him die was one of the most terrifying thing we have ever survived. Don’t do that to Hodor, you guys.
Tormund loves Brienne
There’s a little hope for love to bloom in Westeros as Tormund have completely fallen for our badass warrior woman, Brienne of Tarth. As she teaches Podrick how to fight with a sword, Tormund can’t seem to get enough of her. She’s obviously disgusted, as he’s totally creeping her out with all these antics, but Tormund just cannot stop. If there’s little happiness left in GOT, it’s because of these two. We’re all totally shipping the two characters together. But you can’t hope for too much in Game of Thrones, at least that’s what six years of watching the show has taught us.
Ed Sheeran’s Cameo
Ed Sheeran makes a cameo in the first episode as one of the Lannister army men who sings amazing songs. Arya spots these soldiers sitting to feast over a rabbit and joins them when she hears Ed’s character singing. She’s hungry and she not afraid of anybody anymore, so she joins them. There’s nothing more to Ed’s cameo here, but it’s great to see him in Game of Thrones. Arya reveals her plans of going to King’s Landing and killing the Queen to the men, which obviously they take as a joke, but little clue do they all have about her being thirsty for revenge.
The second episode is going to have more revelations as we go further into the season. With Season 7 only having 7 episodes, unlike the usual 10 episode seasons, we’ll be getting to things faster now. Here’s the trailer for episode 2 of GOT7.
