Daily soaps in India are nothing but a joke that have surprisingly gained a huge fan following. Every day a new serial in introduced on a channel that makes absolutely no sense, but because there are some stupid people who follow it religiously, they exist. However, a single show can tell you what’s going on in the other shows. Basic story line and characters are almost same in every serial and if you want to know what they are, here’s a list of the kind of characters in every Indian daily soap.
1. A female protagonist
This one character is the most important person in the entire show. She is introduced with a sweet melodic song and though she may be shown as a carefree bird in the beginning, she somehow goes to being a sanskaari bahu by the end. The only development in the character is change of postal address and nothing else. Nowadays this character is being transformed into animals but the basic idea behind her character is the same.
2. Male lead (just there)
As every woman needs a man to validate her existence, the female protagonist also needs a male need who’s going to define her and eventually marry her. This male lead is shown naughty in the start, after which he goes onto being a serious guy. However, not much of him is seen because a daily soap is always about women. The male lead is basically a decoration that somehow compliments the setting.
3. Monster-in-law
The female protagonist’s entire life revolves around this one person who is never in a mood to make it less difficult for her daughter-in-law. She always has problems with her bahu, doesn’t quite get along nicely and is ready with taunts 24/7. This character only exists to be a pain in the ass for the female protagonist to make her life even more complicated than it already is.
4. Vamp (always a woman)
In daily soaps, you’ll never find an example of female friendships because her most woman are against each other all the time. Especially this evil character always makes it a point to completely knock over the female protagonist. You can always spot a vamp with the size of her bindi and her dressing sense. She’ll be wearing shimmery clothes and a bindi that is bigger than the size of planet earth.
5. Evil relatives (because joint family)
Because Indians are still not known to the concept of a nuclear family, and those who are need to be educated about the perks of having a joint family, daily soaps always have the entire human species living together. The main motive is to promote the importance of joint family, but if you analyze each character, you’ll realize why your duur ki maasi deserves to stay duur only. A daily soap never has a loving family that wants to see each other happy.
6. A rebel
In this bitchy family, a rebel is born who does not follow the made up rules of the family. At first, you really start liking this character for the attitude and way of living life that he/she believes in. You really think this character will be going places and have high hopes from them. And just when you think that, the writers turn them into incredibly stupid characters who have a change of heart and realize how they should always stick to doing what their family says.
This is when you shut the TV and go clubbing.
