It is about to be 28 years since the death of the legendary Farrokh Bulsara, better known as, Freddie Mercury of Queen. On 24th November 1991, he died due to AIDS-related complications, but his name will live on as long as music exists. Bohemian Rhapsody is a biographical film that honours the four artists who formed a band in 1970 and how it transformed their lives. It is the story of the lead singer Freddie Mercury, who would change music forever. Here are the reasons why you should watch Bohemian Rhapsody –
1. A tribute
Bohemian Rhapsody is not a movie. It’s a tribute to perhaps one of the greatest bands in the world. If you question the above statement even for a minute, I suggest you see this video. In this entire set of Queen at the Live Aid in 1985, amidst 72,000 people at Wembley Stadium, Queen created magic. It is regarded as the greatest live performance in the history of rock music. If you don’t have goosebumps after watching it, you don’t understand music well enough.
2. Performance
It took four years to make Bohemian Rhapsody. Initially, Sasha Baron Cohen would play Freddie with Bryan Singer set to direct. However, the former left the project due to creative differences. Rami Malek was cast instead, which was all for the greater good as the actor brought the iconic performer live on screen. After seeing the movie, it’s safe to say that nobody could have done a better role than Rami Malek. All the actors have done a fantastic job and live up to all expectations.
3. Music
As a Queen fan, and someone who cannot stop grooving to Killer Queen, I would say that the movie does justice when it comes to recreating Queen’s iconic music. Apart from songs that we fans listen to all the time, 11 unreleased songs are also in the film that are a pure delight to ears. What else do you expect when Brian May and Roger Taylor are involved? Apart from all this, the entire Live Aid set, previously unavailable in audio form, is now available, thanks to the movie’s soundtrack.
4. Story
Freddie Mercury’s life was as flamboyant as his performances. The film explores his life in the Bulsara family, becoming Freddie Mercury, the making of Queen, getting married to Mary Austin, his sexuality, his solo album and everything that leads to Live Aid. This is the best part of the movie. It doesn’t show him dying in the end. It shows what made him live forever. Freddie’s death never was and never will be the death of him. Sure, there are some inaccuracies but we can ignore them for all the other things the movie gets right.
5. Freddie Mercury
Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon came together to make a band that would change music forever. There never was and can never be a replacement for Freddie, which is why the band never looked for another vocalist. Queen never officially disbanded but they were not the same without Freddie. Bohemian Rhapsody is all about the glory in which Queen basked as a band. But most importantly, it is about Freddie, who captivated people with his voice and was simply unapologetic for being himself.
