Momma ka purse, jaise hospital ki koi pyaari se nurse.
Yesterday, the cast of Sarabhai vs Sarabhai reunited at Satish Shah’s house and left us nostalgic when they sang the title song of the most beloved comedy show that aired on Star One from 2004 to 2006. The show was our version of Friends, a light hearted sitcom that was immediately loved by the audience. After 69 episodes being telecast, Sarabhai vs Sarabhai came to an end.
The state of Indian television right now is in shambles. From show protagonists turning into houseflies, to giving birth to a demon child, there’s nothing for the sensible people to watch. Today is you switch on your television and see any daily soap channels, you’ll know exactly how poor the situation is. There used to be an era on television, where every channel aired some really good shows. However, in the recent years, the complete opposite has taken place. Nonsensical shows with pathetic writing, and even more pathetic storylines have been conquering the Indian television, and I wonder how do they manage to get those huge TRP numbers.
As sane human beings who’s always hated such shows, we all prayed for good shows that we could watch and enjoy. Let’s just say that our prayers have been answered. With 24 coming back with another season, another great show is making a return. Sarabhai vs Sarabhai is back! Yes, you heard that right. The producers of the shows confirmed that it’ll be back, however, not on television but as a web-series. Well something is better than nothing, right? After all, we’ve always resorted to our laptops for visual entertainment ever since the Indian television went bizarre. Shows from the West are far far better than what we have here, we’d die of boredom is Torrent was not invented. Here’s another reason to not switch on the idiot box again.
A story of how a middle class girl ends up in a sophisticated household, keeping up to her mother-in-law’s expectation and failing all the time, Sarabhai vs Sarabhai was a comedy show conveying Monisha’s struggle. Ratna Pathak Shah was absolutely perfect as Maya, sassy and the epitome of sophistication giving a hard time to Monisha because of her “that’s so middle class” ways. Satish Shah as Indravardhan was the desi version of Chandler, always ready with a sarcastic comment, supporting Monisha against Maya’s constant digs and picking on his younger son Rosesh, who is a complete Momma’s boy. Tolerating all this madness is Sahil Sarabhai, the elder son of Indravardhan and Maya, who is the only sane person in this mental family.
With the show coming back for another season, we are expecting a lot of entertainment. As it’s after a 10 year long period, there’s obviously going to be some time leap they’ll be including wherein a lot of character development can take place. Will Monisha finally give in to Maya’s ways and become sophisticated? Will Rosesh get his big break? Will Maya stop giving a hard time to Monisha and accept her the way she is? We’ll just have to wait for these answers, which is not for long.
The return of Sarabhai vs Sarabhai is actually more important than we think it is. People all over are losing their minds, and are happy it’s back, which should be taken seriously by the producers of other shows. The kind of content they’re providing right now is definitely not something people are enjoying. Maybe they realize the kind of content people really want to see and start coming up with good shows along the same line. Because, frankly, if this does not affect them, so many people being happy about a show returning after about 10 years, nothing else will. Well we can just hope things are corrected before more protagonists turn into other animals.
Some of the best moments from Season 1 of Sarabhai vs Sarabhai –
Monisha : Mummy ji, in dono ki patch up ki khushi mein cheers karein?
Maya : Raise a toast Monisha? If you don’t mind? Cheers karein is so hindi film party scene.
(categorically middle class)
Sahil : Monisha telephone dairy kahaan hai?
Monisha : Jiske J,K,L waale alphabets phate hue hain, ya jiske P,Q,R,S waale alphabets phate hue hain?
(just middle class things)
Indravardhan : Arre wah wah, cake ban raha hai. Kis khushi mein?
Maya : Aaj mera birthday hai.
Indravardhan : Baat mat badlo, maine puchha kis khushi mein?
(Indravardhan 1, Maya 0)
Honorary mention to some of Rosesh’s poems, which TBH nobody understood, but the rhyme scheme was on point.
Hawa mein hain khushi ki aroma
Jeet gayi momma, jeet gayi momma
Say hi to happiness n tata to trauma
Jeet gayi momma, jeet gayi momma
In the living room of Sarabhai’s
Hogi Saahil Bhai ki sagaai
Agley mahiney
Priya Bhabhi phuli na samaai
Yeah Yeah Yeah
Khatar khun khatar khun khatar khun
Sun mere dil ki dhun
Tere pyaar ki oiling mil gayi isey
Toh khatar khun ka ho jaayega gun gun
We’re looking forward to the Season 2 so badly. Are you?
The best #ThrowbackThursday ever!
