It’s a proud moment for our nation as the boys in blue, the Indian Football Team wins the Intercontinental Cup after defeating Kenya with two goals against zero goals from Kenya.
It was an astounding moment in the Indian football, with fans gushing, hooting and going in a frenzy at the stands. Sunil Chhetri, the captain of the Indian Football Team scored both the goals, leading his men to victory. What a captain! What a legend!
The tournament began on 1st June between four teams namely – India, Kenya, New Zealand, and Chinese Taipei. India defeated Chinese Taipei with 5 goals against zero goals from the other side. Despite the brilliant performance by the boys, only about 2,500 people attended the match.
Sunil Chhetri took to his social media accounts calling all football fans to the stands, asking them to come to see the team play. It was heartbreaking to see a player like Chhetri asking people to attend the game.
Mumbaikars gave a massive response and attended the next match against Kenya in huge numbers. Around 9,000 people showed up to cheer the boys and they did not disappoint. India one the match once again, proving once again that the future of Indian football is in the right hands.
On 7th June, India lost the match against New Zealand, but still qualified for the finals against Kenya. On 10th June, the Intercontinental Cup Finals was held at Mumbai Football Arena. India won the finals, securing the title.
Sunil Chhetri scored 8 goals in the tournament, accounting up to 64 goals in total. Chhetri is now tied with Lionel Messi as the 2nd highest active goal scorer in International football, only behind Cristiano Ronaldo with 81 goals. This is a monumental victory for Chhetri and Team India, as football in India needed this achievement.
The future of football in India is bright, and all that is needed is huge support from Indian football fans who could do bring about a huge change with their encouragement.
