Bollywood has blessed us with many beautiful and inspiring movies that have entertained us, as well as made us think hard. 2016 was a good year for Bollywood as some outstanding movies released this year with brilliant performances by the actors and actresses. We take a look at some of the best Bollywood movies of 2016.
1. Pink
Bollywood has not produced many feminist movies and the ones that exist lose the idea amidst the obsession with male heroes. Pink broke the stereotype, starring the greatest actor Bollywood has ever seen, and not glorifying the male lead in any way. The power of no and importance of consent is what Pink taught us all, which easily makes it the best movie of 2016.
2. Dear Zindagi
Mental health, psychiatrist and therapy are taboo words in our society. There are many people who suffer through breakdown but are not able to talk to someone freely without being labelled ‘mad’. Gauri Shinde directed Dear Zindagi let the cat out of the bag informing the audience that therapy isn’t what we think it is. We need to get over these taboos and choose our own way to live life.
3. Udta Punjab
The most unnecessarily controversial movie of 2016 was Udta Punjab that faced a lot of heat regarding it’s release. Starring Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljit Dosanjh, Udta Punjab fought all these battles and proved to be a winner. The social message as well as the way the actors performed deserves a lot of praise.
4. Neerja
Based on Neerja Bhanot, a brave heart who lost her life protecting others, Neerja starring Sonam Kapoor tells her story. Neerja in reality became a hero when she risked her life to save the passengers aboard a Pan Am flight and died a martyr. Neerja, the movie, showed us what it was like on that dreaded day and gave us chills watching it.
5. M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story
The biopic of Captain Cool, M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story lived up to its expectations. As the name suggests, it was more about the personal struggles Dhoni had to go through to become what he is today. A detailed account of Dhoni’s past gave us all an insight into what makes him the person he is today. Cricket and movie fans equally loved the movie.
6. Dangal
Aamir Khan strikes back with this movie that still continues to rule the box office, garnering more praise. The real life story of gold medalist Geeta Phogat and her sister Babita Phogat, Dangal is the story of a father’s journey of self-realization that with determination, people can do great things. It’s not the gender that decides what someone is or will be.
7. Sultan
Salman Khan starrer movies always make big money on the box office, but Sultan was different. Instead of his regular masala movies, Sultan was an intense love story between a wrestler and his wife who sacrifice a lot and fight all odds to be together. The movie showed Salman Khan in the light of an actor and not a star for a change.
8. Fan
Every Shah Rukh Khan rejoiced when this movie was announced, and celebrated even more when it released. After years of doing typical Bollywood masala movies, Shah Rukh Khan returned to the silver screen with an intense thriller that showed everyone what the actor Shah Rukh Khan is really like. He pulled off both the characters very well and promises an even better performance with Raees.
9. Kapoor and Sons
Dharma Productions is known for it’s coming of age and edgy movies that are an insight to what the society is like today. The story of a dysfunctional family who have troubles conveying their feelings to each other and how they manage to fight all this is what Kapoor and Sons is all about. Starring Sidharth Malhotra, heartthrob Fawad Khan and Alia Bhatt, the movie was able to capture the essence of today’s problems.
10. Rustom
Inspired by the famous Nanavati case that ended the jury system in Indian courts, Rustom starring Akshay Kumar was a huge hit. After Airlift, Akshay returned to doing serious roles and pulled off the role of a Navy officer effortlessly. Garnering praise for his acting and the story, Rustom is one of the best movies that released this year.
