Women are and always have been powerful. They never needed someone to show them what to do. They have never needed a man to validate their existence. Our history has shown that there’s nothing new about women empowerment. There have always been strong women and there always will be.
It’s the year 2017 and we’re still not close to equality. Wage differences, unequal opportunities, silencing women every time they make sense, violence against women and abuse are some of the many problems we face today. Despite the fact that we’re given such less opportunities, we have time and again proved how capable we are.
While we remain on the ground, fighting for our rights, the harassers and abusers sit on the top mocking us, making us feel inferior. This, right here, is where we need to stop apologizing for who we are. It took a lot of courage, fighting patriarchy and misogyny, for us to make our marks in the world. It was not necessary, but it is what we face everyday. It took us a lot of time to come here, and now there’s no going back.
Being a woman means being brave. There are many such brave women in our life who are a source of inspiration. Their sacrifices to make a mark in the society cannot go down as useless. While we sit here wishing Women’s Day to each other, millions of women are rioting against the society we live in.
Let’s not make Women’s Day just a day of forwarding a lot of messages on WhatsApp, but making sense out of our existence. We may be fortunate enough, but there are still some women across the world who fight for the basic right of freedom. 8th March should be the beginning of a revolution and not just another day in the calendar of events.
Rise, and make the world a better place.
Happy Women’s Day, you beauties!
