Theatres being shut down has taken a toll on the movie buffs. Some would say, “Surf Netflix!”. But only a true admirer of the art knows the difference between the beauty of a movie and a series. And let’s accept the truth as it is; movies top series. And the fun gets even better when we are offered a package of adventure in the form of a trilogy! The build-up, the cliff-hangers, the unknown of what might be coming next keeps us on the edge of our seats all year long, waiting for the next part to come!
It has been a long time since we have had a trilogy worthy of pulling an all-nighter. So here is a list of some the best trilogies we have gotten over time. Get your popcorn and blanket ready for a great movie night again!
Godfather
You CANNOT talk about trilogies and not start with this classic! The American series based on the novel that goes by the same name, by Mario Puzo follows the trials of Italian American mafia Corleone family. Michael Corleone, the son of the patriarch of the family Vito Corleone, becomes his successor and we see a humble man, Michael, handle the ruthless reign to keep up his family’s legacy by taking beef the other Mafia heads. The trilogy shows a great deal of family values, ambition and ofcourse, power.

The Matrix
Considered the best sci-fi film series of all time, the Matrix, created by the legendary Wachowski brothers, made its way into the hearts of people immediately. It is still said to be Keanu Reeve’s best work yet. The film follows the race between the system of artificial intelligence that captures humanity without their knowledge in the ‘matrix’ and the few prisoners who manage to break free and fight against the system. Neo, played by Reeves, was ‘the chosen one’ to free the humanity from the matrix. His with unmatchable fight instincts and moral compass that always pointed in the right direction, made him a greatly inspired character.

Lord of the Rings
Take a walk down the fantasy lane with this epic trilogy based in the fantasy world of middle-earth. The franchise follows the journey of the hobbit Frodo Baggins, who is set to destroy the on ring, to ensure the destruction of its maker, Lord Sauron. As the journey continues, Frodo’s comrades split and follow a separate quest to take on the rightful kingdom again, of the heir Aragorn. And ofcourse, nobody can forget the wise, clever and quirky character, Wizard Gandalf.

The Hobbit
Although the franchise was released between the period of 2012 to 2014, it is a prequel to the Lord of the Rings series. The trilogy is about the journey of a hobbit, Bilbo Baggins (Frodo Baggin’s uncle). Who was convinced by Gandalf the wizard, to accompany thirteen dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on a quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch).

Ocean’s
This collection of heist films is often considered the defining series of its genre, which also commercialised the heist movies throughout the world. The trilogy follows three different heists in three different movies. An impressive ensemble of cast includes George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Robert, Casey Affleck and many more. The heists are the result of the master minds Rusty, who always manage to see everything with an angle like no one can, and Danny Ocean, who is the leads the group with his never-ending ambition.

Dark Knight Trilogy
An ensemble of the amazing cast of Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy; the Dark Knight trilogy is spread over three movies- Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight rises. Considered the best Batman movie yet, and presumable the best in the DC universe, Batman’s dark, vengeful, yet heroic character was universally acclaimed.

Star Wars
Spanned across three trilogies, focusing on multiple eras, the Star Wars movies depicts the adventures in which humans co-exists with robots or droids, who may assist them in their daily routines. Space travel between planets is common due to lightspeed hyperspace technology. The franchise made the phrase ‘A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…”.

The Hunger Games
This sci-fi dystopian adventure franchise is based on the novel, going by the same name, by Suzzane Collins. The remarkable star cast of Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and Woody Harrelson. The movie begins with the conduct of a national televised event “The Hunger Games” in which tributes in each district fight each other to death, till only one survives. As the series progresses, we see a revolution, with Katniss Everdeen (played by Lawrence) as its face building up within the districts against the oppression of the ‘Capitol’.

While these are only a few to name, the movie world has gifted us many more gems like the Batman trilogy, Back to the Future, John Wick series, etc. With a lot of free time on our hands, and getting bored at home, these trilogies can surely make up atleast a week for us!
