You’ve probably heard the terms “CV” and “resume” thrown around a lot, and if you’re not sure of the difference, don’t worry—you’re not alone! While both documents showcase your professional background, a resume is a concise summary of your experience and skills, perfect for most job applications, while a CV is longer and used for academic or research roles.

A well-crafted resume can work wonders for you and leave a good impression in the interviewer’s minds. Whether it is a remote or work from office job, it can open or close the door to get an interview. To make things easier, we’ve put together the ultimate checklist of what to include on your resume to make sure you’re putting your best foot forward.

1. Contact Information

This section is the simplest part of your resume. Make sure you provide accurate information and place it at the top of your resume for ease of reference. 

  • Full name
  • Professional email address (avoid quirky or outdated ones)
  • Phone number
  • City and state (you don’t need to provide your full address unless required)
  • Links ( LinkedIn and/or portfolio)

2. Professional Summary or Objective

This is arguably the most eye-catching part of your resume as it summarises who you are as a professional. The summary is supposed to be a brief description. So, don’t write more than 2-3  sentences.

  • If you are an experienced professional, a brief summary of your achievements and skills works best.
  • If you’re just starting out, an objective statement can be useful to outline your career goals.

3. Work Experience

This is the heart of your resume. You need to showcase your work experience as well as highlight how you’ve contributed as a professional. 

  • List your most recent job first, followed by your previous positions. This approach is known as reverse chronological order.
  • Make sure to include details of the company you worked at, your role and time period you worked for.
  • Use bullet points to maintain a clear and organised structure in your resume.
  • Whenever you can, include quantifiable results (e.g., “Boosted sales by 15%”). 
  • The experience should include details which are relevant to the new job role you’re applying for.

4. Skills

Skills show what you are good at and how you can fit in your new role.   Cv  So, include relavnt skills. You can categorize them into:

  • Hard skills: Industry-specific abilities like proficiency in software, coding languages, or tools (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Python).
  • Soft skills: Transferable skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.

5. Education

  • Include the institution name, degree, and dates of attendance.
  • If you’re a recent graduate, you can also include relevant coursework, honors, or awards.

6. Certifications and Training

Highlight any certifications or professional training that showcase your skills for the job you are applying for.

  • Make sure they are up-to-date.
  • Online courses (like those from Coursera or Udemy) are worth listing if they are applicable.

7. Volunteer Work (Optional)

If you’ve participated in volunteer work, particularly if it demonstrates transferable skills like leadership and teamwork, be sure to include it. This can enhance your resume by reflecting your dedication beyond just paid positions.

  • Focus on roles where you gained or demonstrated valuable skills.

8. Languages

If you speak multiple languages, include this section. It could provide you an upperhand in your job search.

9. Hobbies and Interests (Optional)

This section is entirely optional, but including relevant hobbies can offer a glimpse into your personality. If your hobbies align with the job or demonstrate valuable traits (like creativity, discipline, or teamwork), they can be worth mentioning.

  • Keep it brief and professional (e.g., “Blogging about digital marketing trends” or “Participating in team sports”).
  • Avoid listing overly personal or controversial interests.

10. Formatting Tips

Keep the following tips in mind:

  • Length: Keep your resume to one page if you’re just beginning your career; those with more experience can extend it to two pages.
  • Font: Use clear, professional fonts like Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman, and keep the font size between 10-12 points.
  • Headings: Organize your resume with clear section headings to help recruiters easily locate the information they need.
  • Consistency: Maintain consistent formatting throughout, especially with dates, fonts, and bullet points.
  • Proofreading: Double-check for any grammar or spelling mistakes—nothing turns off recruiters like a typo!
